DRAWING - BEGINNING, INTERMEDIATE, ADVANCED

Students will explore the techniques of drawing in conjunction with a theoretical investigation of drawing as a dynamic artistic practice. Students will be introduced to various drawing strategies. This practice will be cultivated through directed in-class exercises, sketchbook assignments, independent projects, as well as class presentations and screenings. Within this framework, students will be encouraged to experiment and dig deeper into drawing as a tool for expression and discovery. This course will emphasize the value of this pursuit, working to foster visual problem-solving and critical thinking as it pertains to the development of each student’s studio practice.
PRINTMAKING FOR NON MAJORS

As a print survey course, Print for Non-majors will introduce students to the basic conceptual issues of print and the technical processes of relief, intaglio, monoprint, and lithography. This course is a “sampler platter” in that it will give students a taste of numerous processes so that students can get a sense of which they would like to explore further.

COLLAGE AND ACTIVISM
The Brooklyn Brainery, Brooklyn, New York
Historically collage has offered artists a means to directly engage with the visual refuse of their time. Through examining, re-organizing, and manipulating this imagery, collage presents a language through which we can re-imagine the stories we've been told. This 3-hour workshop will introduce students to the place of collage during periods of political unrest, and offer creative exercises on how we can disrupt and reclaim the images that dominate our cultural landscape. Students will learn introductory collage techniques and discuss the range of images that emerge in group conversation. Students will also be provided with resources on how they might bring these images forward into the urban landscape.
CREATIVE GRANT WRITING SEMINAR

Learn how to talk about your work and values in this 2-hour introductory course. Through presentations and workshop sessions, we will look at grants that support emerging artists/creatives, and talk about how to pitch a project. We'll share important resources, and look at helpful examples. This workshop will also give a brief (unofficial) overview for the Fulbright research grant-writing process.
DRAWING AND KNOWLEDGE

In this 6 session course, students will explore the practice of drawing as a powerful language of questioning. We will locate this investigation within art history, looking at drawing's heritage as a tool to examine, critique, appreciate and order our perceivable world, and in doing so, create space for something wholly new. Class presentations will introduce students to drawing’s deeply interdisciplinary significance as a medium: from the first recorded marks of cave paintings, to Galileo’s drawings of the moon, these examples and others will help us consider the uniquely-human impulse to draw what we perceive, and the meaningful questions that lay at the heart of our creative practices.

MONOPRINTING
Grafisch Werkcentrum Amsterdam, NL
Students will explore the creative potential of the monoprint - a unique print - in this introductory course. Demonstrations will introduce students to techniques of hand-wiping, reductive and additive processes, transferring, chine colle, and multi-plate printing and registration. This will be contextualized through historic and contemporary presentations on the medium. Students will build upon this conceptual and technical foundation, exploring through project-driven work, their own content and sensibilities through the expressive practice of monoprinting.
DRAWING WITH INK

In this 3-hour workshop, students will learn techniques for how to draw using india ink. We will learn about brushes, appropriate papers, and experiment with wet-media methods. Class exercises will focus on tackling a drawing from observation using ink, and how to build values and marks in relation to a particular subject.

This course will offer students a comprehensive introduction to collage and mixed media practices introduced through collaborative exercises, demonstrations, and project-driven work surrounding the artist book. Students will learn various book forms and methods, and use their own collected materials and findings to explore the book as an active vehicle for their ideas
THE URBAN SKETCHBOOK
The Brooklyn Brainery, Brooklyn, NY
Investigating the relationship between perception and mark-making, this workshop will explore practices of drawing from observation, paying attention to how varied conditions and settings affect the way we make marks. Structured as a plein-air drawing course, students will draw directly from the robust urban landscape of Brooklyn. We will explore drawing as a marked record of experience, focusing on observation/sensation-based exercises that explore scale and proportion, as much as impression, movement and mark, investigating how these visual elements work to create meaning in a work of art. Sketchbook work will help us build to a drawing-based research assignment, where students will share findings from this directed period of discovery.
DIY PRINTMAKING

Students will learn the basic principles of relief printing, mono printing, as well as alternative non-toxic processes that can easily be done at home. The course will demonstrate these techniques and allow students the chance to practice, build their own images and plates, and explore the potential of the mark and the multiple in the production of their imagery.
ALTERNATIVE DRAWING PROCESSES

Students will explore conventional and non-conventional practices of mark-making in this intensive drawing workshop. Directed by drawing-from-observation exercises, students will investigate techniques of masking, photo-transferring, stamping, and the use of wet and dry medias in the realization of their work. Incorporating elements of chance, collaboration, and intuition, students will explore different visual languages of drawing and how they work to create meaning in a work of art.
LIFE DRAWING IN ITALY
Concordia University, Montreal, QC
This 6-credit, 5 week intensive course provides a unique opportunity to draw in one of the best-preserved historical centers between Tuscany and Umbria - Bagnoregio, Italy. Participating in more than 100 hours of drawing from observation, students will locate themselves within the rich history of art and ideas which continues to resonate in the museums and churches of this region. They will draw directly from paintings and sculptures as a way of paying homage to a social, cultural, and art-historical lineage. The coursework will finish in Florence, Siena and Rome, where students will present their filled sketchbooks from this directed period of discovery.
STENCIL SCREENPRINTING

In this 3 hour course we will learn the basics of at-home screen printing using hand-cut stencils. Students will learn how to design and cut their own stencils, and print DIY-style on bags, clothing, books, and so much more.
SIMPLE FOLD BOOKS AND PASTE PAPER DESIGN

In this 3-hour workshop, students will learn techniques of paste paper design and simple fold books. Using paint, glue, and DIY texture-making tools found in your home, we will explore how to prepare and design your own hand-crafted papers. These papers will offer us the materials to create simple fold books using the pure magic of paper engineering.

Through this course, students will learn the techniques and practices of drawing and painting from observation. Students will develop a sensitivity to form, as well as cultivate the present, open and humble state of mind it takes to look at the world with a curious and critical eye. Through directed in-class exercises, we will explore the use of line, mass, scale, contrast, as well the concept of choice in constructing how we see and represent the world.
THE DADA ARTIST BOOK

In this workshop, students will learn to bind books in the spirit of the Dada art movement of the early 20th century. We will discuss the ideas and methods of this art historical period, using these concepts as a foundation for a set of book works. This investigation will begin with Dada games, using elements of chance and collaboration to create opportunities for unusual and exciting visual narratives. Students will then create their own set of conditions for self-directed investigation inspired by the enabling constraints of the Dada-ists.
WORKS ON PAPER: COLLAGE AND MIXED MEDIA

In two sessions we will learn how to hand-tear paper, assemble sketchbook using the perfect bound method, and design an original cover using materials from home. Students will leave with a book ready for sketching and writing, and the skills to make more at home.
